  • Wall-e + Eeeva = <3

Forget all that Tom Cruise "You complete me" cinema-barf! Wall e is the best love story on film! Why? Because the story is told with very few words. And with love, actions speak louder than words.

Eve is being unresponsive, so Wall e tries to fix her. While he's waiting for Eve to wake up, he wraps Christmas lights around her and pulls her around with him. Beautiful, happy background music plays as we watch Wall e attend to Eve's every need, even holding an umbrella over her head while it rains, despite being struck by lightening several times. It's the umbrella-holding scene that gets me every time! Wall e wants to take care of Eve, even when she will never know all he did for her.

I think it's fitting that Wall e watches scenes from an old American musical over and over. It's remeniscent of a simpler time. A time when children weren't being force-fed sexual messages by the media that made them grow up too fast. A time when the divorce rate was low and "Birthday Sex" was an eternity away from being on Top 20 radio. Here's a quote from the director Andrew Stanton (imdb.com):

"When I got to 'Hello, Dolly!' and I played 'Put on Your Sunday Clothes', and that first phrase 'Out there...' came out, it just fit musically... I finally realized, 'You know what, this song is about two guys that are just so naive, they've never left a small town, and they just wanna go out in the big city for one night and kiss a girl. That's my main character.'

That's why I put Wall e and Eve on my background. I can point to that movie and those characters and say "Kids, that is what a healthy relationship looks like." For once, it's not a helpless princess being rescued by a strong prince. It's not a good girl trying to reform a bad boy. It's two beings who are together because they want to be together, not because of finances, social status, family pressure or lust (yes, I know, we're talking about robots here, but just go with it!) And they don't express their affection by giving speeches and making promises. They laugh together, play, help each other, protect each other and THAT, my friends, is a better example of a healthy, loving relationship than anything I have ever seen in a chick flick.
